Typhoon Ragasa, the world's most powerful tropical cyclone this year, has left a trail of destruction across China's southern Guangdong province.
The storm uprooted trees, toppled power lines and flooded streets in one of the world's most densely populated coastal regions.
In Shenzhen, a major technology hub, residents emerged from their homes after days of shelter, while emergency workers in Zhuhai rescued elderly villagers from rising floodwaters.
Authorities evacuated nearly 2 million people to safety, suspended public transport and closed schools and businesses.
As the cleanup begins, with the Chinese government pledging $50 million for rebuilding efforts, experts warn that global warming may increase the frequency of such super typhoons across Asia.
