French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned the violence and destruction during nationwide protests, vowing to hold those responsible accountable while acknowledging the grievances of peaceful demonstrators. His televised address on Sunday came after he held an emergency meeting with Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu and senior cabinet ministers earlier in the day, following some of France's most destructive protests in recent years. Macron promised tougher action against vandalism, emergency assistance for affected communities and possible restrictions on demonstrations where necessary. He also acknowledged growing public anger over the cost of living, rising fuel prices and deteriorating conditions in schools, pledging consultations with students, teachers and trade unions. The protests began with students demanding education reforms before expanding into a broader movement over economic hardship and public services. Macron called for calm and dialogue, insisting that legitimate demands for change must not be accompanied by violence.
