Three years of war between Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces have left thousands of children orphaned and destitute in Omdurman, part of the capital, Khartoum. Before the conflict, more than 30,000 orphaned children were already living on the streets of Khartoum; officials say that figure has since risen. Many children are forced to take on odd jobs — shining shoes, selling water or working as bus conductors — to survive, while aid organisations warn they face exploitation, hunger and abuse. The wider economic collapse has also pushed children from intact families onto the streets.
