In Warsaw’s old town, churches are nearly empty, with mostly older attendees. Some clergy say the church doesn’t need to change, emphasising piety and sincerity. While some young Poles find comfort in religious spaces, many are leaving, feeling the institution is out of touch. Catholic commentators argue that the church must become more liberal to connect with younger generations who are increasingly indifferent. Memories of a Polish pope, Pope John Paul II, who inspired resistance to communism, still linger. Yet for many, spiritual support remains the church’s key role. Without reform, youth engagement is likely to keep declining.
