Lebanon’s government is attempting to reassert control over its southern border regions following November’s ceasefire, but Israeli attacks on Hezbollah continue nearly daily, undermining stability. Returning villagers describe living in constant fear, their bags perpetually packed, as neither state forces nor the truce provide meaningful protection. While Hezbollah faces international pressure to disarm, the group refuses compromise until Israeli withdrawals are guaranteed, leaving communities trapped between unresolved tensions. Local economies lie shattered, with nearly 100,000 still displaced and over 200 killed since the nominal ceasefire began. Political divisions persist over whether state weapon monopolisation should be enforced through dialogue or deadlines, as reconstruction remains conditional on disarmament. Amid the rubble and idle checkpoints, residents of border towns echo one grim consensus – the war never truly ended, only paused, with normal life suspended indefinitely.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reports from southern Lebanon.
