The long-delayed EU–Mercosur trade agreement is facing renewed uncertainty as Brazil signals that time is running out to finalise the deal. Mercosur leaders say the bloc has already made major concessions, warning that further European demands could make the agreement unworkable for South American producers.

Vinicius Rodrigues Vieira, an economist and professor at the Armando Alvarez Penteado Foundation, says the deal risks collapse if new safeguards undermine access to European markets for Mercosur farmers. He argues that failure to reach common ground could erase years of diplomatic effort and reshape trade relations amid global competition from China and ongoing US tariff disputes.
