Thousands of displaced Palestinians in Gaza are being forced to seek shelter in landfills and garbage dumps as they flee from Israeli bombardment.
In Deir el-Balah, central Gaza, families have resorted to pitching tents atop a former landfill site, surrounded by toxic waste and sewage.
With nowhere else to go and unable to afford rent, these refugees face dire living conditions amidst piles of rubbish, lacking access to clean water, food, and medical care.
Children are falling ill with diseases like scabies, yet hospitals are overwhelmed and short on medicine. Makeshift camps exemplify the desperate situation for tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza pushed southwards by Israel's military operations, only to find that even so-called "safe zones" are overcrowded or inaccessible.
Al Jazeera's Hind Khoudary reports from Deir el-Balah, Gaza.
Olga Cherevko is spokesperson for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. She says, conditions in displacement camps in the south were already poor before this recent wave of new arrivals.
