Farmers in Libya’s western city of Gharyan are struggling as drought and climate change devastate olive and fruit harvests.
Once renowned for its fertile soil and high-quality olive oil, the region now faces severe water shortages. Many farmers are forced to truck in water at high cost to keep their crops alive, while others abandon their land altogether.
Years of drought have also triggered infestations that have wiped out fig production in nearby Wadi Alhay.
Local officials warn that declining harvests and water scarcity are threatening livelihoods and driving people away from agriculture.
