Speaking to Al Jazeera, Gamal Mansour, a professor at the University of Toronto, has said that al-Sharaa’s speech represents Syria “being accepted into the fold of nations” after years of alienation. “That means that Syria can now transactionally act with other nations, being accepted as a trade partner, as a security partner, as a cultural entity,” he said. Al-Sharaa appears to understand that his perceived legitimacy on the world stage will feed his domestic agenda.
