Rising fuel prices and India's push to cut its dependence on imported oil are being felt by millions of consumers across the country. Nearly all of India's crude oil is imported, leaving households and businesses exposed to global price swings driven by conflicts in the Middle East. The government has responded by blending petrol with ethanol — a biofuel derived from maize, rice and sugarcane — which officials say has saved at least 16 billion dollars in foreign exchange over the past decade. India is also diversifying its oil suppliers, turning to Russia, West Africa and the Americas to reduce its reliance on the Middle East.

Al Jazeera's Ishan Garg reports from New Delhi, India.
