Zimbabwe's wetlands, crucial habitats for numerous bird species, are rapidly disappearing due to urban development, pollution and climate change.
This loss is causing a significant decline in bird populations, with some species facing the threat of extinction. At Lake Chivero, outside Harare, conservationists are working to protect and rehabilitate displaced and injured birds.
The sanctuary, home to over 400 wild bird species, serves as a haven for both local and migratory birds affected by habitat loss.
The shrinking wetlands not only impact local ecosystems but also have far-reaching consequences for migratory birds that traverse continents.
Environmentalists stress the need for coordinated regional efforts to preserve these vital habitats, emphasising that the loss of wetlands is a pressing issue requiring immediate political action to prevent further species decline.
