Aime Cesaire, a poet and playwright from Martinique, was a key figure in the Negritude movement, which emerged in the 1930s. Led by black writers from France's African and Caribbean colonies, the movement rejected colonialism and celebrated African culture and identity. In this animated documentary short, we are challenged to confront history and reclaim the power of self-definition.
A film by Marcela Pizarro, Midiaou Diallo and Pierangelo Pirak. Voices: Cindy Sissokho and Miss Yankey. This film is part of a series, Race Historicised: Epistemologies of Colour, that delves into the archives of Black intellectual thought, to showcase the work of towering figures who have contributed to the anti-racist struggle, in both theory and action.
